2023 Advent — Angel Wings Stained Glass Craft

For our church’s advent theme of 2023, “Light in the Darkness,” I created a stained glass window craft that would transform with the sunlight that passes across the south facing windows in our church sanctuary during our morning services. Throughout each week of advent everyone — kids and adults alike — was invited to color a feather highlighting a brief phrase for the theme of the week (“God Surprises,” “God Hears,” “God Sees,” “God Provides”). Each week these feathers, printed and colored on marker paper to enhance their transparency, were used to decorate the wing “stained glass leading” structure and make 4 unique and luminous sets of wings.

In a surprise discovery, the reverse welcomed us for the Christmas Eve service with the light from the inside shining out.

2021 Advent — Mary’s Song Baby Blanket

This advent, our church focused on Mary’s Song (The Magnificat from the gospel of Luke). To honor this, I proposed creating a baby blanket, symbolizing our anticipation of welcoming baby Jesus into our midst. Each week, I represented a theme from the song with an animal (joy = sparrow, strength = elephant, God lifts the lowly = ant, faithfulness = dog). Everyone in our church, regardless of age, was invited to draw and reflect on iron-on sheets featuring these animals. Once completed, each animal was ironed onto a square, contributing to a quarter of the baby blanket. The finished blanket was then donated to Mary’s Place in Seattle.
